For non-native English speakers who want to pursue academic studies abroad, PTE Academic, a computer-based English language test, is available. There are tests for speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The PTE-Academic Exam is divided into four modules: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In many questions, two skills are tested simultaneously, such as speaking and reading or listening and reading. Speaking and writing are combined into a single session, however listening and reading are divided into two separate sessions. In all four formats, there are twenty various types of questions, ranging from multiple-choice questions to essay writing, reading aloud passages, and choosing the appropriate response. In a safe testing setting, the complete exam is taken in a single, three-hour session while seated at a computer. Online testing is used for the speaking section of the exam. Your voice is recorded and transmitted so it can be marked. The biggest advantage of this test is that you get your results very quickly—in only 5 days. The PTE test is composed of actual academic and general topics. You’ll find graphs, summaries, excerpts, and a ton more information on the things all around you. Both native and non-native accents can be heard on the exam, just like in real-world conversations from daily life and other media like television and movies.

PTE Academic reports an overall score, communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores. The overall score is based on performance on all test items (tasks in the test consisting of instructions, questions or prompts, answer opportunities and scoring rules). Each test taker will answer between 71 and 83 items in any given test and there are 20 different item types. For each item, the score given contributes to the overall score. The score range is 10–90 points. Note: the overall score is not an average calculation of the communicative scores.
